Millennial muslim lifestyle: 10 daily sunnah habits to live by
Sunnah is the literature of traditional customs and practices of the Islamic community. Sunnah also commonly refers to the etiquettes or habits that the Prophet SAW performed in his daily life. These sunnah habits are believed to be acts followers of Islam should practise to bring themselves closer to their faith. Here’s a compilation of daily Sunnah habits we can inculcate in our lifestyles:
- Bismillah: Whether you’re getting ready for the day – putting on your clothes or drinking water recite ” Bismillah” as it translates to the name of Allah, the most gracious and the most merciful.
- Waking up: In order to remove traces of sleep from your face and start your day in an energetic way, one is encouraged to sit up and rub palms on your face followed by a dua for waking up.
- Use miswak: Use Miswak or a Miswak toothpaste: Followers of Islam consider Miswak the toothbrush of olden times but still available and equally effective. Miswak has antibacterial properties which makes it for a great natural toothpaste or ingredient in toothpastes. Even during Ramadhan, Miswak is used before the onset of dawn.
- Always start with right: When putting on clothes and shoes, one should start with their right side. Whether it’s your arm, leg or feet, you should wear any clothing starting with the right. When putting on your clothes
- Mindful eating and drinking: It is important to eat or drink mindfully and slowly and this can be done by being seated while doing so. This will help one to eat consciously and prevent from fatigue due to overeating. Emphasis has also been laid on eating together as a family to build healthy relationships.
- The 1/3rd rule: To achieve a well balanced diet and attitude towards meals one should allow food to fill one third of the stomach, leaving the other two thirds to water and air
- Sleep with wudhu: Going to bed in a state of purity after performing ablution or wudhu helps one to sleep in a state of purity and some Islamic scholars claim that being in a state of wushu would protect sleepers from nightmares. ( Taqrir Bukhari 2/78 )
- Sleeping with the right posture: Sleeping on your right side with your hand under cheek is a sunnah way to sleep. This posture has proven scientifically to be an optimal sleeping position as it helps us relax without straining our heart.
- Speak good and avoid gossip: Sometimes we discuss irrelevant topics which might lead to speculation or might not concern us. It is only Sunnah to redirect our energy to constructive tasks that add value in our lives.
- Smiling is sunnah: Smiling not only spreads joy but it is proven to increase serotonin, a natural antidepressant hormone. With a smile you can channel positivity, gratefulness to almighty.
We don’t have to make grand gestures to increase our faith but it is the little things in life, the little actions that can help us connect with our faith. One way of following some of the advices above is to set reminders on our devices until the time they become a habit and part of everyday life.
